p8pbb bridge - light

Postby erwinvb » December 16th, 2011, 11:06 am

I saw there is a 'light' version of p8pbb bridge, which is licensed as GPL. This means it's free software, right?

...1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program's source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuo...

and

...You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee....

So, that 99 dollars is the fee for transferring a copy? And if someone pays that, he's free to distribute copies without asking for a fee?

I'm modernizing the website of a small computer user group. The sites currently exists as a website and a seperate forum. Now with Joomla it would be very nice to have the forum integrated.

I tried the wrapper build in Joomla, but it's unable to determine the height of the forum page and gives me scrollbars.

The Joomla page will only be used for news items, information and downloads. (there's no need for users to login to Joomla except the administrator).

As the regular version is the cheapest (until someone is willing to share the light version) it's tempting to buy that one, although it might be overkill.

I have some doubts though.. as I read it's encrypted with Ioncube and needs activation.

    * - Is a non encrypted version available, because the installation of the Ioncube loader will be problematic with this hosting provider?

    * - I'm developing my website on Localhost, and the website will be accessible from two different domains (which may actually change in the future), does this give me any issues with activation?

    * - What if blogomunity.com ceases to exist, will the plugin remain working?

The page with wrapper and forum URL should be from same domain, in this case auto-height will work. Note that http://www.site.com and site.com are different domains.

No, not available.

We will inform you additional licenses fore free if the domains are similar.
* - What if blogomunity.com ceases to exist, will the plugin remain working?

It will work. Our bridge doesn't load any data from blogomunity.com and is not tired to our website in any way.

Would it be possible to set up a demo installation with the Light version? (there's one for the full version, but can't see one for the ligt version) I would like to see if it's sufficient before I buy it.

Sorry, no, we don't have a demo for light version because actually you won't see anything - just usual Joomla and usual phpBB.

light version doesn't provide visual integration of phpBB into Joomla, so no special themes are required.
phpBB looks completely same as usual.

 Woow.. almost threw away 99 dollars.

I thought visual integration was the basic funtionality (which is actually the only thing I need for my site). iFrames just don't work because of navigation and bookmarking issues.

ionCube is an issue with my hosting provider, if they can enable it, it will definitely take some time and setting it up locally for development purposes isn't really working out.

This in combination with the refund policy (can't ask for a refund if: "the server doesn't meet the requirements" and "You just want your money back") made me decide not to buy the software.

Thanks for the replies, but I will try to find another solution.

So some one using p8pBB Light should be prepared to edit phpBB's prosilver template (or whatever) to make it look like the Joomla template (menus, etc and all), correct?
